Press release: 9 March 2012

Three Tibetans shot, one killed, by Chinese state security
According to sources in Tibet, three Tibetans were shot – one of them killed - by Chinese security forces in Tagkhar Township, Pema County, Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Eastern Tibet (1) between 2 – 3pm on 6 March 2012.  The man who was killed was called Choeri and was 28; the two who were wounded were brothers, Jamphal Lobdu and Karkho (2).

Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said:
“In the last two month Chinese state security have shot and killed at least eight Tibetans during and after protests; many more have been wounded. Tibetans are being killed because their demands for freedom threaten the Communist Party ‘One-China’ ideal, but Tibetans continue to stand up to the authorities despite the great risks of doing so.”

On 25 January, approximately 100 local people (3) marched to the local government offices in Tagkhar Township and pulled down a Chinese flag. After the protest, some of those involved were arrested and some went into hiding to avoid arrest. The government announced a reward of 10,000 – 20,000 yuan (4) for information about the wherabouts of a protester called Thubwang, believed to be a leader of the protest.

On 6 March, Thubwang was arrested in Tagkhar Township. Choeri, Jamphal Lobdu and Karkho heard about the arrrest and went to the police station to object to the arrest.

Free Tibet has not been able to confirm the exact sequence of events, but security personnel opened fire and Choeri died at the scene. Jamphal Lobdu and Karkho were both wounded – one in the arm, the other in the leg; they have been taken to Golog regional hospital and are receiving medical treatment.

In a neighbouring township -  Wangri, Pema County - a protest took place the next day, 26 January 2012, during which the Chinese flag was burnt. Protesters had portraits of the Dalai Lama.  Six people were arrested, five of whom remain unaccounted for. The person who was released reported being "tortured" and his body was badly bruised.
