DHARAMSHALA, June 27: Monks and lay followers all over the world marked the 34th birthday of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorjee, including an official event at the main seat of previous Karmapa, attended among others by newly elected Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang and Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche.

The 34 year old religious leader’s portrait was brought to the main shrine where monks chanted the long life prayer followed by the offering of Mandala to his throne.

In his short address, the chief minister expressed his gratitude for being a part of the occasion and thanked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his efficient team in the Centre for having accorded blanket permission to His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorjee to visit Sikkim.

He said that this had been a long pending dream of the party as well, saying that credit goes to all monks and individuals who stayed on innumerable hunger strikes at BL House and at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

He also claimed to have reiterated his stand during his recent trip to Delhi, where he called on all the important leaders of the country.

He concluded by thanking H.E. Goshir Gyaltsab Rinpoche for his benign presence and blessings, who in return, presented the Chief Minister with an auspicious souvenir.

HRDD Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha thanked all the Dharma Gurus for spreading the message of peace expressed hope that the state will be blessed very soon with His Holiness the 17th Karmapa’s visit.

Gyuto Tantric monastery in Sidhbari, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, where the Karmapa lived since arriving from Tibet at the age of 15, celebrated his birthday with monks and foreign devotees offering long life prayer.

Monks in Bodh Gaya also celebrated his birthday at Tergar monastery where a special cake weighing 70 pounds was savoured by young monks at the monastery.

Karma Sonam Tapke, a Buddhist monk from Arunachal Pradesh at the monastery said, “To mark the special day, the monks carried the portrait of His Holiness the Karmapa and took a procession around the monastery while chanting prayers for him.”

Pal Dilyank Monastery in Boudha, Nepal, also marked the birthday by performing a traditional masked dance.
