DHARAMSHALA, June 27: Gyaltsen Norbu, the Beijing appointed Panchen Lama regarded by Tibetans as the “fake Panchen” has been elected as the President of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Branch of the Buddhist Association of China on Saturday, Chinese state media reported.

Norbu replaced Zhukang Tubdankezhub, who held the post since 2003. The former president has been elected one of the 18 executive vice presidents during a plenary session held on June 22 in Lhasa, the capital of occupied Tibet.

The 29-year old’s rise in the political hierarchy of China is seen as a carefully curated bid to claim legitimacy over Buddhism and its extended clout, both in occupied Tibet and in China by the Communist Party. Besides the new position, he also serves as the vice president of the Buddhist Association of China and is a member of the Standing Committee of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)—China’s top political advisory body.

The Panchen Lama is considered one of the highest Buddhist lamas by the Tibetans and is historically an important figure in both Tibetan Buddhism and its political strife. Exile Tibetans in India and overseas commemorated the 30th death anniversary of the 10th Panchen Lama earlier in January.

The 10th and the former Panchen Lama who is remembered as a leader for the Tibetan people penned the famous 70,000-character petition documenting China’s systematic attempt to undermine Tibetan language, culture and identity. He was imprisoned and later died under mysterious circumstances in January 1989 at the age of 50. Tibetans say that he was poisoned to death by the Chinese government.

His reincarnation Gedun Choekyi Nyima, selected by the Dalai Lama, was abducted by the Chinese government in 1995 and has not been seen since despite Beijing’s admission that he is alive.
