DHARAMSHALA, October 18: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who has often professed his admiration towards the concept of European Union (EU), suggested such unions around the world to end violence.

The Dalai Lama attended an international conference on Peace and Harmony in Imphal today, organized by the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly at the Imphal City Convention Center.

The Spiritual leader said at a press conference before a civic reception function, “I always feel that this (EU) spirit must be brought in Africa to develop an African Union, then Latin American Union, then gradually Asian Union that means some kind of a union with India, China, Japan etc. Ultimately the whole world should be some kind of Union. That’s my dream.”

The Tibetan leader cited example of members of EU, many of whom during the WWII were enemies but came together for their ‘common interest’.

Speaking of national interest, the Dalai Lama said that he does not like US President Donald Trump’s slogan, ‘America first’.

As for the problems pertaining to the Northeastern region of India, he urged the people to think more broadly and also allow constitutional provision to be implemented thoroughly. He said, “You can criticize if the central government’s policies are not suitable.”

The 82-year-old also appealed for the ‘special care’ of the environment of Tibet, which is the source of ten major rivers in Asia. He also added that the conservation of its ecology impacts not just 6 million Tibetans but over 1 billion human lives.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in Imphal for his maiden trip to the state yesterday. He was received by the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh and State Assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Imphal International Airport.

The Nobel Peace Laureate, who was referred by CM Singh as ‘state guest’ is expected to meet the CM and Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla separately.
