DHARAMSHALA, August 10: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has warned that if the situation of today’s world remains the same, the present century would be as violent as the 20th century, which had witnessed over 200 million death over two world wars.

Speaking at the Siri Fort Auditorium on ‘The art of Happiness’, an event organized by Speaking Tree, he said, “Wherever you see these days, there are man-made problems everywhere. If today’s situation continues I think this 21st century also can become similar to that of the 20th century where there was a lot of violence.”

He also questioned whether these acts of ‘immense violence and suffering’ produced a better world, adding that everyone must think of not repeating the violent 20th century.

His Holiness has often suggested that the 21st century should be a century of peace and compassion where conflicts would be solved through dialogue and not through use of force.

The Nobel Peace Laureate said, “Self centered attitude is the basis of jealousy, competition, distrust and fear, which brings irritation. That irritation creates anger and that leads to violence.”

The 82-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader blamed the self-centered attitude and the present world’s attachment towards materialistic goals for the lack of inner values. “As per my observation, I think the existing modern education system is not adequate to bring more peaceful or happy human being because it is very much oriented towards material values and not much on our inner values,” said the Dalai Lama, adding that people rely on religion for inner values.

He said that all major religious traditions of the world carry the same message of love, compassion, tolerance and self-discipline. He added, “But I don’t think we are serious practitioners of the real message,” the Dalai Lama said, “So now only hope is through education.”

The Dalai Lama will participate in dialogues with business and university leaders at the TATA Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai on August 14, 2017.
