DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 14: Global symbol for peace and Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Monday implored India to take charge in the drive to include secular ethics in the modern education system to ensure a shift away from the overly materialistic-oriented outlook that is prevalent in the world now.

He was speaking on the topic of “The Need for Universal Ethics in Education” as part of the inauguration of Chitkara University’s 11th Global Week 2019 in the city of Chandigarh. The Tibetan leader was awarded an honorary doctorate of literature by the university.

The Nobel laureate said that only India can assume the stewardship of the said task as the country has the thousand years old tradition of secular ethics and that it is only a matter o “revival” and not introduction of the subject anew altogether.

He said that the secular education can steady the imbalance caused by the contradiction between the basic human nature- which is positive on the one hand and the overly materialistic outlook of the modern education on the other. “Today we really need some education about our emotions, our mind and how to tackle these things. Education in this country have the thousand years old concept of ahimsa, karuna. Now these should be part of the education system,” the Buddhist leader said.

The Dalai Lama has been spearheading a movement to include what he calls ‘secular ethics education’ (SEE learning) in the education system to promote the “hygiene of emotions”. Schools, colleges and universities around the world such as Emory University have joined hands in the movement while school bodies in the Indian capital and Ladakh have included the same in the syllabus.

The 84-year old leader will speak at the Chandigarh University campus in Ludhiana on Tuesday before returning to Dharamshala the next day, according to his office.
