Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama announced financial assistance to the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to provide essential supplies such as food and medicine for the poor and needy, as India goes under complete lockdown to fight the global pandemic that has in India infected 727 people and killed 20 so far.

In a letter to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh state Jai Ram Thakur, the Dalai Lama expressed his support for Thakur in his efforts to control the growing threat of the Covid-19 virus (popularly known as ‘Coronavirus’). It has spread across the world and has now broken out in this state.

“Since Himachal Pradesh has been my home for almost 60 years, I naturally feel an affinity for its people. Therefore, as a token of respect and sympathy, I am making a donation from the Gaden Phodrang Trust of the Dalai Lama to the Chief Minister’s Fund in order to contribute to providing essential supplies like food and medicine for the poor and needy members of the community,” he said in the letter.

He also expressed confidence that the steps taken by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be effective in containing the spread of the virus.

Modi announced a complete lockdown of India for 21 days starting from Tuesday midnight, to stop the spread of the epidemic. The lockdown requires all 1.3 billion people to remain in their homes except for essential needs.

The state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India registered three positive cases of the disease, with one death, a Tibetan who had returned from the US on 23 March.

It has been reported that an 81-year-old Tibetan living in London, Jamyang Choegyal Kasho, has succumbed to the “Coronavirus disease” (SARS-CoV-2) in the night on Tuesday, becoming the second Tibetan to die from the disease.

The disease is affecting 200 countries and territories around the world, with 531,799 cases and 24,071 deaths as of 26 March 2020.

It is reported that the US now has the most cases in the world, with infected cases above 82,000 on Thursday, surpassing the national tallies of China and Italy, and with a death toll moving beyond 1,200.
