DHARAMSHALA, August 3: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has expressed sadness at the loss of life and the devastation of property caused by flooding in various parts of Gujarat over the weeks due to incessant rain.

In a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, the exile Tibetan leader said, “I would like to express my deep condolences to you, the families who have lost loved ones and others affected by some of the worst flooding in more than a century.”

The Dalai Lama further added that he understands that the state administration is doing everything to rescue those affected and that the relief efforts are underway.

“As a mark of my sympathy, I would like to make a donation from the Dalai Lama Trust towards the relief and rescue efforts,” the 82-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader said in his condolence letter to the Gujarat CM.

The death toll in Gujarat has touched 218 according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) with 61 people death in Banaskantha district alone, the worst hit region.

Following heavy rainfall and release of water released from Dantiwada and Sipu dams 4.5 lakh people in the state were affected. However, with help from the Army, Air Force and National and State Disaster Response Forces more than 40,000 people have been rescued and moved to safer places.

CM Rupani during his visit to flood affect district of Patan assured the normalcy will be restored in another ten days.

The Central Government earlier last month announced an interim relief package of INR 500 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a former CM of Gujarat, also announced ex gratia of INR 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and INR 50,000 to people seriously injured in the floods.

In 2015, the state suffered a similar flood, which resulted in at least 72 deaths. As a solution to avoid recurring calamity, CM Rupani has suggested that people living near river’s course to move out to a safe place, assuring that his administration would provide them all the help necessary in rehabilitation.
