DHARAMSHALA, June 25: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama who voluntarily devolved his political authority in 2011 to an elected leadership said on Monday that he has not made any major mistakes during his leadership.

Speaking through the live teleconference from his residence on “happiness & its causes” to a group at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, Australia earlier today, the Dalai Lama said, “I think in political matter, I feel there have been no major mistakes. At age 16, I took the responsibility. Then Tibet’s situation was very difficult and delicate so the Regent asked me to take the responsibility.”

He further said, “So I lost my own freedom. At 24, I lost my country, then there were a lot of problems. But I think, now looking back, during those difficult periods, no major mistakes. I think all my major decisions eventually seems very correct,”

The Tibetan leader said that looking retrospectively, his decision to institutionalize democracy for the Tibetan people in exile and giving up political authority has been the right move. “So long run, all my major decisions have become correct,” he said.

The soon to be 83 years of age also said that he is confident of living for another 15-20 years. He said, “My physical health, now 83 years and since I am ok, I am looking forward to another 15, 20 years.”

He further added, “I often ask people, including Indian security persons in the morning when I meet them, what they think of my age. They make a guess around 70. Then I tell them that I am in 80s… They say I look very young”.

Earlier in June, few mainstream Indian media houses published reports claiming that the Dalai Lama was suffering from advanced stage prostrate cancer and that he was seeking treatment for the last few years. The reports were later quashed following statements from his inner circle as well as the Dalai Lama himself.
