DHARAMSHALA, Sep.4: The Buddhist leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the first day of his four-day teaching here today told his devotees that all major religious traditions teach compassion. A several thousand devotees packed the Thekchen Choling Tsuglakhang temple premises here to receive teachings from the foremost Buddhist leader of the world.

The Dalai Lama said, “There is a requirement for different religious traditions to cater to different people. As a Buddhist practitioner myself, I never say that Buddhism is the best religion. Nor do I try to propagate the religion that I follow.

“It is up to individuals whether they follow a religion or not but if one does follow a religion, then there must be utmost dedication. Instead of following what the religion teaches, people tend to create differences on the basis of my religion and your religion,” he further said.

The Tibetan leader lamented that religion has been manipulated these days and has become a source of violence and hatred among the inhabitants of this world. “That’s shameful,” the Tibetan leader regretted.

He advocated compassion as a basis for everything saying that even a non-believer can relate to being compassionate towards fellow human beings and animals.

The 83-year-old gave teaching on the Buddhapalita's Commentary on the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way (drel-pa Buddhapalita). The teaching on the same topic began last year at the request of a group from Asia including Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Tibetan leader will conclude the teachings on September 7 following which he will head to on tour to several nations including Sweden, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, his private office announced.
