DHARAMSHALA, APR. 7: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in Tawang today after concluding his schedule in Dirang in the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh. Tawang where he will conclude the last leg of his trip to Northeast India is an area claimed by Beijing as part of southern Tibet. However, the Chief Minister of the state Pema Khandu made a rancorous statement days ago saying it is Tibet, not China that shares borders with his state, making many in Beijing and New Delhi quite unable to place his statement in the context of ‘status quo’ between the two countries.

The Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay, however, sounded more cautious when he told Indian news channel NDTV over video conference on Thursday that the Dalai Lama’s trip is essentially a religious commitment rather than what is being made out by China, even calling Beijing’s objection as “drama”. All the while, Sangay acknowledged that the ruling Indian administration under PM Modi has been proactive in highlighting the octogenarian Tibetan leader publicly. He called the shift as being- ‘closed door to open door’.

Sangay said that the recent interactions between the Indian government and the Dalai Lama “are a clear signs where things that are happening behind closed doors before are now being done in the open. So in that sense, the current (Indian) government is letting the facts out, to be seen by the public. Otherwise these things have happened in the past.”

China, on the other hand, has not relented in making statements that emphasized on getting even with India for allowing the Tibetan leader whom they regard as a “separatist” to be welcomed and celebrated against their repeated objection.

Meanwhile on the ground in the border state, the soon to be 82 year old Tibetan leader gave teachings and public talks in Bomdila and Dirang despite bad weather and undeterred by travel difficulty, covering distances overland, accompanied by the top rung of the state’s leadership. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is also expected to meet the Dalai Lama in Tawang over the weekend.

In Dirang, the Nobel laureate gave teachings at the Thubsung Dhargyeling Monastery, and an open space to a gathering of over 20,000 people. There, the Tibetan leader reiterated his message of peace and as a Buddhist, to practice and study the rich Nalanda school of Buddhist tradition.
