DHARAMSHALA, July 3: With the harsh Dharamshala monsoon, Ladakh has been a favorite fixture on the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s calendar around this time of the year. He touched down at Leh’s Kusho Bakula Rinpoche airport earlier today to a mass welcome by the people of the predominantly Buddhist region in upper reaches of northern India.

The Dalai Lama was received by thousands of worshipers and admirers from his passage to his residence there from the airport. He has a 19-day schedule in Ladakh.

The Tibetan leader’s 83rd birthday on Saturday is a much anticipated fixture for Sonamling Tibetan settlement, the Ladakhi Buddhist Association and Ladakh Gompa Association among others who oversaw his birthday celebrations last year at the same venue.

The egalitarian leader met a welcome group including representatives from Ladakh Buddhist Association, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, All Ladakh Gonpa Association, Ladakh Ama Association, Ladakh Muslim community, the District Commissioner, SP as well as monastic clergy such as Gaden Trisur Rizong Rinpoche, Taklung Matrul Rinpoche, Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and Thigsey Rinpoche.

His Holiness will give teachings on Shantideva’s A Guide to the Bodhisatva’s Way of Life (Tib: Chodjug) from July 10 - 12 and participate in the Yarcho Chenmo-the annual ‘Summer Buddhist Council’ of philosophical debate and discussion – from July 18 to 20 at Samstanling Gonpa Sumoor in Nubra besides teachings in Nubra as well as in Leh at Shiwaitsel teaching ground.

The Dalai Lama is also widely revered by the Buddhist majority population as well as respected and loved by the growing Muslim populace in the region.
