DHARAMSHALA, April 9: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Saturday said that it is dependent on the Tibetan people whether the institution of the Dalai Lama should continue. The Tibetan leader was responding to questions from the press regarding his reincarnation.

He reiterated that he had made it clear, as early as 1969, that whether or not there should be another Dalai Lama was up to the Tibetan peoples. He added that if the followers including the Tibetan people, the Mongolians, and the Buddhists from the Himalayas from Ladakh to Tawang think the institution is no longer relevant, it will cease.

Responding to a question about where the 15th Dalai Lama will be born, the Tibetan leader replied, “Nobody knows. I pray I’ll continue to be able to be of service to sentient beings, but I sometimes doubt if I’m even the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama.”

The Tibetan leader rubbished Chinese government's claim on choosing the next Dalai Lama, saying, “If the Chinese government wants to be involved in this they should first announce their acceptance of the theory of reincarnation. Then they should recognize reincarnations of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping for their claim to have any legitimacy.”

The Tibetan leader's whose visit to Arunachal made headlines since it started on April 1 mentioned that he may resume discussions with prominent Tibetan spiritual leaders regarding his reincarnation later this year.

The jovial and healthy looking Tibetan leader who unusually covered several hundred kilometers' distance by road during his visit to the region took off his glasses and jokingly told the reporters, “Look at my face. Do you think this talk of my reincarnation is urgent?”

"I was due to reach here by helicopter, but as it turned out I came by road with the added benefit of making contact with far more people on the way. I’d like to thank every one of you who came out to welcome me", the Tibetan leader earlier told some 50,000 people at Yiga Choezin teaching ground, the venue of his teachings in Tawang.

The Tibetan spiritual leader gave discourse on Kamalashila's The Middling States of Meditation & Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo's Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva .

Earlier today, His Holiness gave an empowerment of Avalokiteshwara and visited Ugyen Ling, the birthplace of Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama.
