December 20, 2017: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today conferred Hayagriva Empowerment (tamding yangsang kawang) at Sera Je Monastery in Bylakuppe at the monastery’s request.

“Traditionally empowerments are given after the 25th day of a month of Tibetan Lunar Calendar. However, the main quality of the students is faith, which I can see in all of you. I also conducted a divination earlier, which came out very favorable. Hence we came to this decision of giving the initiation to general public,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said at the initiation attended by over 10,000 monks, nuns and devotees.

The initiation was also attended by 104th Gaden Tripa Kyabje Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin Palsangpo and former Gaden Tripa Rizong Rinpoche along with other abbots and CTA President Dr. Lobsang Sangay.

Citing the special connection of Tibet and Avalokitesvara, the Dalai Lama said that one of the main reasons of conferring the empowerment today at Sera Je Monastery is due to the monastery’s special and unique connection with Hayagriva.

The 82-year-old exile Tibetan leader fondly recalled S Nijalingappa, former CM of Karnataka, for providing land to the Tibetan refugees for the purpose of resettlement. The Dalai Lama also remembered how the first Tibetan settlers lived in tents and with time how it has transformed gradually into prosperous settlements including the establishment of the ‘three great monastic universities.

“The main purpose of establishing the monasteries is not to showcase great architectural marvel but to inculcate the teaching of Buddha. Therefore, along with the external development, we must also concentrate on the inner development,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said while applauding the efforts put by elder generations of the past fifty years for preserving the teachings.

His Holiness reminded them of the importance of using their logic and reasoning while studying the teachings of Buddha and also to educate others in the same manner.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama who arrived in Bylakuppe yesterday will inaugurate the new debate courtyard of Sera Mey Monastery followed by a teaching on Tsongkhapa's In Praise of Dependent Origination (tendrel toepa).
