DHARAMSHALA, APR. 5: Just a half day’s drive from the borders of occupied Tibet, the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama reiterated his long maintained ask of ‘Genuine Autonomy’ for Tibet in Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh, the frontier state of India this morning.

The octogenarian Tibetan leader told reporters that he is not seeking secession of Tibet, rather autonomy under the framework of the Chinese constitution with the spirit of union in mind. “We are not seeking independence. We are very much willing to remain within People's Republic of China. I always admire the spirit of European Union. Individual nation’s sovereignty is important but what is more important is our common interest,” the Dalai Lama said.

China which calls the Tibetan leader a “separatist” has lodged a protest with Indian Ambassador in Beijing after repeated objections in the run up to the trip by the Dalai Lama to North-East India and particularly Tawang region which China claims as their own.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters, "India in disregard to China's concerns obstinately arranged the Dalai Lama's visit to the disputed part of the eastern part of China-India border, causing serious damage to China's interests and China-India relations."

"Arranging his visit to those sensitive and disputed areas not only runs counter to the Indian side's commitment to the issues related to Tibet but also escalates disputes over the border area," she said indicating that the development will brew further tension in the region that saw flash points earlier.

Meanwhile Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu told Times of India, “Let me get this straight. China has no business telling us what to do and what not to do because it is not our next-door neighbor.” The statement from the Indian politician that his state shares boundary with Tibet and not China, many say, is not in par with New Delhi’s stand that recognizes Tibet as an integral part of China.

The website of the Dalai Lama’s private office stated that the octogenarian leader will travel further north to Dirang tomorrow and give teachings at Thupsung Dhargyeling Monastery on April 6.

He will begin his teachings in Tawang from April 8, where followers have been eagerly waiting to receive him since Monday morning. The Tibetan leader will teach Kamalashila's The Middling States of Meditation & Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo's Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva at Yiga Choezin. On April 10 morning, the Dalai Lama will confer the Rinzin Dhondup Initiation at Yiga Choezin.

Since 1983, the current visit is the sixth by the Dalai Lama as a state guest to Arunachal Pradesh where the Tibetan leader has a huge following, especially in the border regions.
