DHARAMSHALA, May 15: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulated the newly elected South Korean President Moon Jae-in on his victory in the presidential elections.

“Today, the world is passing through difficult and challenging times. Peace and security seem under threat in many places. We take courage from the strength of democracy in the Republic of Korea,” he wrote in his letter to the South Korean president.

The 64-year-old former human rights lawyer won the presidential elections by a landslide victory with 41 percent of the votes over Hong Joon-pyo of Liberty Korea Party with 24 percent and Ahn Cheol-soo of centrist People’s Party with 21 percent. The margin the biggest winning margin ever in South Korean presidential elections.

“Now more than ever it is important that all who wish for peace stand together. In seeking to resolve what may seem like intractable problems, the most appropriate way forward is to engage in dialogue in a spirit of understanding, respect and mutual benefit,” the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said.

The Octogenarian spiritual leader also wished him for all the success in meeting the challenges that lies ahead.

Born to a refugee family who fled North Korea during the Korean War, President Moon spent his initial days in POW camp and in 1975 was imprisoned for several months for staging a protest against dictatorship of Park Chung-hee who ruled South Korea for 18 years until his assassination in 1979.
