DHARAMSHALA, July 25: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulated the newly appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson in a letter sent from his residence in Dharamshala today.

In the letter, His Holiness shared how he was touched by the affection and friendship shown to him by people from all walks of life during his regular visits to the UK over the years.

His Holiness touched on the historical relationship between Tibet and Great Britain, calling it a long and unique relationship. “To this day we maintain close contacts with members of the families of British Government officials who were posted in Tibet prior to 1959.”

“I am also very appreciative of the strong interest and support that our British friends have expressed for the Tibetan people's aspirations for freedom and dignity,” he wrote.
“These are very challenging times,” His Holiness continued and said he has made public his view on the issue of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union (EU), commonly known as the Brexit.

He reiterated his admiration for the spirit of the European Union, according to which, he wrote, “the nations of Europe, after fighting each other for centuries, decided instead to work together for the common good.”

“Nevertheless, I understand the choice made in the 2016 referendum and I respect it,” he added.

His Holiness expressed the hope that, whatever the outcome of impending changes may be, the U.K. will continue to enjoy an influential position in a highly interdependent world.

He offered his prayers and good wishes in conclusion.

Johnson, who took over as the Prime Minister on Wednesday following the resignation of Theresa May is the leader of Brexit campaign.

He has expressed confidence in his first speech as the Prime Minister that he would be able to renegotiate the Brexit deal and be able to exit the European Union in October with “a new deal, a better deal.”
