DHARAMSHALA, July 10: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has congratulated President-elect of Mongolia, Khaltmaa Battulga, following his victory in the presidential poll against Parliament Speaker Miyeegombo Enkhbold of the ruling Mongolian People's Party.

Expressing encouragement at the interest and enthusiasm that the people of Mongolia have shown towards Buddhism, the Dalai Lama in his congratulatory letter said, “Mongolian people no longer rely only on blind faith but as 21st century Buddhists, they have established their faith on understanding.”

The Tibetan spiritual leader who recently turned 82 also recalled the unique and close relations peoples of the two nations shared since the time of the Third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso.

The Tibetan leader also pointed out that Buddhism has historically shaped the identity, culture and spiritual life of the Mongolian people.

“With their emphasis on such fundamental human values as compassion and non-violence, the Buddha's teachings have a great potential to guide and benefit humanity without contradicting an individual’s personal beliefs,” the Nobel Peace Laureate said.

The Tibetan spiritual leader has also expressed his firm belief in the former martial arts star and that his administration ‘would continue to preserve and uphold these values’.

“I wish the President-elect every success in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the Mongolian people,” said the Dalai Lama, currently in Ladakh.

The 54-year-old Battulga of Democratic Party won the elections with 50.6 percent and would inherit a country currently in economic crisis.
