DHARAMSHALA, NOV. 11: His Holiness the Dalai Lama held an interactive conversation on Cultivating Compassion in the Next Generation with delegates from Washington at his residence today. It was led by Cyrus Habib, the Lieutenant Governor General of Washington, with the involvement of youth and community leaders of Washington. There were over 1500 members who participated in the discussion via video conferences from six different universities and institutes including Seattle University, Evergreen State College, Elmonds Center for the Arts, Temple De Hirsch Sinai, and Gonzaga University.

The conversation touched on key issues like mitigating climate change, overcoming inequality and improving civil discourse in politics. Six scholars from Compassion Scholar Program were also in attendance; the program draws inspiration from His Holiness’ wisdom to serve others in the face of suffering.

His Holiness remarked on the current state of affairs of the tussle between modern education and happiness by saying, “The existing education is not adequate to take care of human values and ethics. Warm heartedness is the key factor to a happy life and happy community.” He stressed on the need to revamp existing education with the focus on educating our minds and emotions.

His Holiness asserted the need to practice counteractive constructive emotions like compassion, “When you are warm-hearted everything else appears positive to you. In contrast, self-centeredness will only bring fear and negativities; therefore, the practice of altruism is very necessary to retain warm-heartedness.” He also talked about climate change and its adverse influence on the course of the world, “Our ecology process is very sensitive, and once the balance is disturbed it could lead to irrecoverable damage. We have to be cautious and sustainable in use of natural resources.”

On sharing their experiences of their projects, His Holiness advised the delegates on the oneness of humanity and the power of education to influence younger generations, “Education you see has the power to mould and shape the future generation. If education lacks the inclusion of basic human values like compassion, it will only generate self-centred and narrow-minded generation.”

The five-day delegation concluded their visit today in Dharamshala. The program was organised by the Association of Washington Generals and Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Washington State. During their five-day stay, they met with the leaders from all three branches of the Central Tibetan Administration and visited the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Norbulingka Institute, Tibetan Museum, Men-Tsee-Khang and Astrology Institute, TCV School.
