DHARAMSHALA, July 17: Tibetan leader and foremost Buddhist figure His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Sunday inaugurated the sixth edition of the summer Buddhist debate event, ‘Yarchoes Chenmo’ at Samstanling Monastery in Sumur, Ladakh. The Buddhist religious festival is attended by over 8000 locals and tourists.

Advocating study of the Buddhist texts for its academic merit and beyond “simplistic fashion,” the Dalai Lama said, “Whether we follow a spiritual path or not, we need to improve our education. And in this, logic and psychology can be very useful. Although great insight can be derived from Buddhist literature we don’t need to deal with it from the point of view of religion, we can take an academic approach.”

“Inner transformation is not a matter of faith or prayer. It involves reason and the use of human intelligence. A calm and healthy mind has a very positive effect on our physical health and well-being,” he further said.

The Tibetan leader however said that he does not promote the religion he follows and that people should follow whatever religion that suits them. He said, “I never suggest that Buddhism is best or try to propagate it. To do so would be like claiming that one medicine is better than others whatever the circumstances or condition of the patient.”

On Monday, the second day of the religious festival, the Tibetan leader gave teachings on the Buddhist master Je Tsongkhapa’s The Principal Aspects of the Path during his teaching at Samstanling Monastery.

The host of the ‘Yarchoes Chenmo’, Ganden Trisur, Rizong Rinpoche, the Abbot of Samstanling Monastery welcomed the Tibetan leader and referred to him as a non-sectarian Buddhist leader.

This morning, the Dalai Lama conferred the ‘Dolkar Yeshi Khorlo Wang’, a sacred initiation to thousands of devotees. His followers offered ‘tenshug’ ritual for the health and long life for him.

The 83-year old is scheduled to fly back to Leh on July 18 where he will give teachings to the predominantly Buddhist populated region, sources said.
