DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 21: The Tibetan leader currently in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar on Sunday advised the congregated mass, majority of which were monastic, to include modern education in their curriculum to encompass a broader and more holistic learning system in the Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia.

The Tibetan leader who places great emphasis on approaching Buddhism as an interactive learning system involving logic, reason and investigation rather than an arcane set of rituals and customs, urged Mongolian monastic community to follow the lead of Tibetan monasteries in India where modern education including science, math and English as pre-requisites for a complete education are taught.

The Tibetan leader has been a vocal advocate in blurring lines of traditional education for the better. Major monasteries in exile teach modern education while many Tibetan schools in exile have begun adopting some forms of curriculum such as debating, which was previously done only by the monastic.

Over 12,000 people who were able to get into the Buyant Uhaa Sports Complex as well as the many others waiting outside in the -40 degrees cold listened to the Dalai Lama give initiations as well as teachings on Tsongkhapa’s ‘In Praise of Dependent Arising’ and ‘Three Principal Aspects of the Path’. He also told the mass to study the 300 volumes of the Kangyur and Tengyur to understand what the Buddha taught. “Merely cultivating faith in the teaching of the Buddha is not enough, we must use critical analysis to properly understand what he taught,” the Tibetan spiritual leader said.

The Dalai Lama is revered as a Buddhist teacher in Mongolia where more than 50 percent of the population follows Buddhism as a religion.

China has expressed strong objection to the visit, saying the engagements could harm bilateral ties and hamper the Mongolia’s economy which is already in “deep recession”. However, the Mongolian government has put up a bold stance, hosting the Tibetan leader and possibly setting a new trend of not kowtowing to Chinese economic might, the likes of which the United States and Britain could emulate from.

The 81 year old who is in Mongolia for a four-day schedule took part in a conference on Buddhism and Science being organized by the Tritiya Dharma Chakra Foundation, earlier today.
