DHARAMSHALA, November 3: Every human being, irrespective of whether one is a believer or non-believer, must practice warm heartedness for a more peaceful and happier world, said the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Thekchen Chöling Tsuglagkhang today.

The Tibetan spiritual leader was speaking during a teaching on Tsongkahpa's Three Principal Aspects of the Path at the request of Namgyal Monastery.

“Being a social animal, individual’s happiness is dependent on the society’s wellbeing. Hence it is important for every to practice warm heartedness and it is possible since the basic human nature is compassionate. It is not based on religious teaching but has been proven through various scientific researches,” said the Dalai Lama.

The Nobel Peace laureate also expressed his disappointment over the various incidents of bloodshed caused in the name of religion, which he said was the source of love, compassion and kindness.

“Those who differentiate between religious faith and create problems have failed to grasp the basic message of all the major religions, which are love and compassion for others,” the 82-year old said, adding that concern and compassion for others including animals also help in the preservation of the environment as well.

The Dalai Lama suggested that those who practice warm heartedness live a longer and happier life compared to those with self-centered attitude. He said, “We must not be compassionate to others with mere thinking that it would yield good karma for the next life or attain nirvana. If you are kind to others you will live more peaceful life and have more friends in this lifetime.”

Speaking on the importance of introduction of ‘mental hygiene’, the Tibetan spiritual leader said that happiness based on sensorial level are short lived and that humans must use their mind to develop happiness rather than depending on sensorial gratification.

Following his teaching on Tsongkahpa's Three Principal Aspects of the Path the spiritual leader asked the devotees to initiate a positive change in life or else attending teachings would be a waste of time.

“I practice Bodhichitta and emptiness on daily basis. You should too since we all are same human beings with same intelligence and seeking happiness. Therefore, you must practice it on daily basis to try to gain control over your negative emotions and self-cherishing attitude. If you manage that, whether you live a year or ten, your life would be meaningful,” said the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The octogenarian leader will be attending a national conference on Science, Religion and World Peace tomorrow at the Government College, Dharamshala, organized by the Bhaktivedanta Institute, Karnal.
