DHARAMSHALA, July 13: Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama who is currently in the remote Nubra Valley in Ladakh today gave a religious teaching and also met with the local Muslim community at the local mosque there. The Tibetan leader reached the valley via IAF helicopter yesterday from Leh.

The Tibetan leader who addressed a large gathering consisting of locals, tourists and followers from nearby Ladakh said that being a good human being transcends whether one follows a particular religion, holds alternative belief over whether there is a next life or not, or have different interpretation of what’s good. “Every one desires to be happy and the key to that is compassion and concern for the well being of others,” the 83-year-old said.

The Buddhist leader gave a teaching on the texts of ‘Eight Verses of Mind Training’ and ‘In Praise of Dependent Arising’ in the morning to a several thousand strong congregation at Disket Phodrang in the Nubra valley.

The egalitarian Tibetan leader who has repeatedly advocated religious harmony met with the local Muslim community there at the local mosque there. He met and interacted with a group of Muslims from Bogdong region and the Turtuk region located close to the Pakistan border.

While lauding the brotherhood and harmony within the Muslim community in the region and in India, he said, “Now time has come to show the world that religious harmony is possible. That is my request and I suggest it.”

The Dalai Lama is scheduled to lead the 6th Ladakh Yarchoe Chenmo, an event based on secular debate involving practitioners from different religious community. He is also scheduled to address the youth there on ‘Secular Ethics’.
