DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 27: Months after the Phuntsokling Tibetan settlement in the eastern Indian costal state of Odisha was hit by the devastating cyclone Titli, the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration has dispensed relief funds for the affected Tibetans.

The CTA’s Department of Home on Tuesday said the victims have been compensated with a total of INR 90,16,413.86 (USD 1,26,466) and an amount of INR 24,28,586.14 (USD 34,063) from the reserve funds of the Department.

Secretary Wangdu Tsering said that the funds were raised with generous donations from, “well-wishers across the world and we remain thankful to all the organizations, both domestic and international, NGOs, individuals who have expressed their solidarity with us and our people in the settlement.”

“Similarly, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the state government for compensating our people to the tune of INR 52,23,678.00 (USD 73,268) and the compensation money due to the farmers have rightly been paid through bank accounts of individual farmers,” he further said.

According to CTA, nearly 80 percent of standing maize crop in 1700 acres were damaged in addition to many of the fruit and non-fruit plantations, as well as damages to residential houses due to the natural calamity.

The total funds raised from donors, the CTA reserve fund and the state government compensation still fall short by almost half of the INR 3 crores (USD 4,20,786) figure concluded by the joint CTA and State government damage assessment survey.

A devastating cyclone named ‘Titli’ made landfall in the Gajapati district in October 2018 where the Tibetan settlement is located. Settlement officer of Phuntsokling Tibetan settlement Chonor Samdup earlier told Phayul that 90% of the year’s crop has been destroyed in the agriculture-reliant Tibetan community there.

The Phuntsokling Tibetan settlement is one of the 45 Tibetan settlements under the CTA and is reliant heavily on agriculture. The current population of the settlement is 2092 with 398 families, the department of home said.
