DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 6: The commemorative events planned by the exile Tibetan government to ‘thank you India’ after 60 years in India has been relocated from New Delhi, the country’s capital to the Central Tibetan Administration’s seat here in Dharamshala. The move by the CTA follows what many called a shift in position of the New Delhi government concerning the refugee Tibetan community.

On March 1, Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha was reported to have issued a note for internal circular to all Ministries/Departments of Government of India as well as State Governments not to accept any invitation or to participate in the proposed commemorative events proposed by the CTA, citing “tension in relation with China”. A noted China expert called the move as “course correction” with regards to stabilizing relations with China.

CTA was to hold high profile events in New Delhi at the Thyagaraja Stadium on April 1 as well as an inter-faith meeting at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial at Rajghat scheduled for March 31 with big names in Indian politics such as veteran BJP senior leader L K Advani and former PM of India Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Ngodup Dhongchung, representative of the Dalai Lama in Delhi, told Hindustan Times on Tuesday that the event has been rescheduled. He said, “We will now have the event in Dharamshala instead of Delhi. We will also have it on March 31 instead of April 1.”

“Some people may be disappointed. But we are guests of India. Indian people have been very generous to us. We understand the compulsions,” he further added.

There are indications that the Tibetan President Dr. Lobsang Sangay who is in New Delhi, is sorting the matter out, “meetings with officials and dignitaries in Delhi”, although CTA’s Information and International Relations wing Secretary, Sonam Norbu Dagpo told Phayul that President Sangay’s visit to the Indian capital has no direct link with the development.

Sources say that the events will be ‘low key affairs’ held in Dharamshala where the exile Tibetan government is based and where the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has lived for the last six decades.
