DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 23: The President of the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay said that education is the only way to strengthen the future generation of Tibetans who will carry forth the Tibetan movement. Dr. Sangay was speaking at the opening of the ‘7th Tibetan General Conference on Education’ here today.

The 3-day conference began this morning at the T-building, Central Tibetan Secretariat in Ghangchen Kyishong premises where 242 principals, directors, teachers, and counsellors from 76 Tibetan schools in Nepal and India gathered. The President said, “I consider the teachers and educators as one of the noblest professions. My teachers have played a big role in shaping me and I believe that all of you who have dedicated your lives to educating Tibetan children are leading a noble life.”

Dr. Sangay who has proclaimed education as his core agendas during his campaign said his education policy is essentially fulfilling all the needs that he as a student did not receive. “The expenses of the education department of the CTA has more than doubled ever since I took office and that is representational of my emphasis to improve education in the Tibetan community,” he said.

The head of the Tibetan polity also said that educators, especially teachers hold a significant role in ushering not only academic excellence but an overall society that thrives on innovation and education in general. He lamented that Tibetan society en masse is prone to infighting and bickering on lesser issues while neglecting and even becoming mere spectators to countering China and its global advances.

The conference held every five years is the largest gathering of teachers and school administrators to discuss the education policy of the Tibetan exile community introduced over a decade ago. The agenda for this year’s conference include how to enhance the calibre of principals and headmasters.
