A bekötött szemű aktivista folytatja a menetét India körül

DHARAMSHALA, May 23: Sherab Tsedor, the young Tibetan activist, who has been carrying out a blindfolded rally across India, last week reached the Indian metropolitan city of Kolkata.

“Last Sunday, coinciding with the seventh week prayer rituals of Dhondup Phuntsok’s demise, I marched in the city, collecting signatures and releasing free Tibet balloons,” Sherab Tsedor alias Migmar Tenzin told Phayul over phone.

Dhondup Phuntsok, 26, a Tibetan resident of Kolkata had jumped off the Howrah bridge into the river Ganges on April 2 wearing a ‘Free Tibet' t-shirt in an apparent protest against China’s continued occupation of Tibet.

Sherab has been rallying across the length and breadth of India with his eyes blindfolded to highlight the “plight” of the Tibetan people inside Tibet and the “indifference” shown by the United Nations and world leaders.

Beginning his march from the exile seat of Dharamshala on March 10, the Tibetan activist who last year attempted to immolate himself in front of the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, embarks on a day-long (9am to 5 pm) blindfolded march while carrying out a signature campaign in all the places he visits.

“While being on the march, many Tibetans that I met appealed to Tibetan youngsters not to burn themselves,” Sherab said.

“Tibetan have told me that although inside Tibet burning oneself could be the only option of protest but in exile Tibetan youngsters can lead and carry out many other forms of protests,” the activist recounted others as saying.

Sherab has so far collected more than 20,000 signatures for his petition urging the People’s Republic of China to respect the fundamental right of the Tibetan people and calling on Beijing to allow international independent fact-finding delegations and media to visit Tibet.

The petition also appeals to international governments and the UN to call on China to genuinely uphold international human rights standards and norms in Tibet.

The Indian capital New Delhi is Sherab’s last destination where he plans to submit the petition to all the embassies and international organisations in New Delhi.
