DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 5: Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama this morning at a mass audience to a large group of foreigners here said that holistic development of the world can only be achieved through peace as the building blocks.

The octogenarian leader said that despite the world’s growing population and the connectedness of modern world, he has “reason for hope” as the “desire for peace has much increased” over the course of the last century.

The Dalai Lama told members of various nations in attendance that global peace can only be achieved if we embrace the oneness of humanity and through dissolving differences perceived on the basis of religion, race and nationality.

The most revered figure in Buddhism also said that despite his own religious affiliation, he does not propagate Buddhism in the west as he feels that secular approach to promote peace is much more effective and relevant.

The 82 year old said that since each human being can become catalysts for positive change, future generation of human beings should be taught secular values such as the ancient Indian teachings academically, devoid of religious connotations. The Dalai Lama said that the modern education system is leaning overtly on materialistic values and places little or no emphasis on inner values that promote “emotional hygiene”.

The learned practitioner of the Nalanda tradition of Buddhism said that analytical approach to a problem with an objective mind can overcome the issue and that tackling one’s negative emotions and harnessing constructive emotions is the key to personal development, whether a believer or a non believer.

Over 700 foreigners from South America, Mexico, Canada, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East and Asia gathered at the main court yard of the Thekchen Choling Tsuklakhang for an interactive meeting with the Tibetan leader.
