DHARAMSHALA, July 24: One of the most conservative Chinese communist leader known as the “butcher of Beijing” for his role in the massacre of hundreds of Chinese students at the Tiananmen square, also responsible for martial law Tibet in the late eighties has died aged 90. The Chinese state media Xinhua reported on Tuesday that Li died Monday night in Beijing but did not give more details.

Li who was then the Premier, declared martial law in Beijing on national television on May 20, 1989, which escalated two weeks later at the Tiananmen square, in which hundreds of people including many students in the pro-democracy rally were killed.

A survivor of the massacre at Tiananmen and former journalist Rose Tang wrote on her Facebook account, “I was waiting for Butcher Li to stay alive to stand trial for being a frontman of the Tiananmen Massacre. And China’s #1 news agency Xinhua describes Li as “a loyal Communist soldier and excellent leader of the Party and nation”? I wish Hell existed and Li would be tortured there!”

The 4th Premier of the PRC was considered one of the most conservative leaders within the politburo for his views in the 1980’s and 1990’s, primarily for urging caution for economic reforms and the introduction of free markets in China. Until his death, he was demanded by critics to stand trial not only for the Tiananmen Square massacre but also corruption allegations including his close association with the controversial multibillion-dollar hydroelectric project ‘Three Gorges Dam’, which he personally oversaw.

While he did not hold any position directly related to occupied Tibet, Tibet Policy Institute (TPI) research fellow Tenzin Tsetan told Phayul that Li was partially responsible for the repressive policies in Tibet since he was the Premier of the People's Republic of China.

“When the protests took place in Tibet between 1987 and 1989. The protests led to the eventual imposition of martial law in Tibet. Many repressive policies were introduced in Tibet before his retirement in 2002, while he was part of the highest echelons of the Chinese Communist Party and a participant in the third and fourth Tibet Work Forums held in 1994 and 2001 respectively,” the research fellow under the CTA think tank told Phayul.
