By Tenzin DharpoDHARAMSHALA, May 24: The Kashag (Cabinet) of the Central Tibetan Administration announced that the 34th Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) religious initiation will be held from January 3 – 13 next year, in a circular today.
“As per the request of the Kashag, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has already announced at the Tashi Lhunpo monastery earlier this year that he will hold the Kalackhara initiations in January 2017. Therefore, we would like to inform you that the Kalchakra initiations will be held at the holy city of Bodh Gaya from 3 – 13 January 2017,” the circular mentioned.
The 34th Kalachakra scheduled for January 2016 had to be cancelled on August 31, 2015. At a press conference the Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay said, “The preparation for next year’s Kalachakra requires longer time than other rituals to be performed by His Holiness, which are highly strenuous. The Central Tibetan Administration has requested His Holiness to reduce his schedule to which he has kindly agreed.”
The speculation on the cancellation of the religious event was a lively issue during the campaigning of the Sikyong candidates earlier this year with two candidates (Lobsang Sangay and Penpa Tsering) broaching different explanations for the cancellation.
The Kalachakra initiations are considered the epitome of all Buddhist teachings by Buddhists the world over and are attended by devotees in exile as well as Tibetans from inside Tibet.
The Tibetan leader has given 33 Kalachakra initiations so far since 1954, the year he gave it the first time at Norbulingka, Tibet. The last one was held in Ladakh in 2014.
