DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 7: The Indo Tibetan Friendship Association (ITFA) today announced its decision to host this year’s International Himalayan Festival coinciding with the conferment of Nobel Peace Prize upon His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Mr. Ram Swaroop, one of the founding members of ITFA, said at a press conference, “We are thankful that Maha-Mahim(His Holiness) has chosen Dharamshala and Himachal Pradesh as his abode for all these years and to commemorate the conferment of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, both the Tibetan and Indian people of the area will be celebrating the event happily”.

A gathering will be held at the tourism department run Hotel Bhagsu where where cultural performances by both the Tibetan and Indian community will be showcased in a gesture of mutual friendship and co-operation.

In line with the organization’s primary aims and objectives, the organization promotes friendship and mutual kinship between the two communities which was marred by the recent murder of a Tibetan man and the occasional disagreements between the people of the two communities.

Asked if the official functions and events will trickle down to any tangible change or help mend differences between common people of both communities, he replied, “When two communities live in a common space, and as long as Tibetans and Indians are in Dharamshala or anywhere else in India, differences tend to rise as it does anywhere else. The recent case is an unfortunate incident and I regret that it happened but we must look forward. A wrong whether by an Indian or Tibetan is wrong. By looking at a broader perspective of things, we must try and look at the more positive developments.”

Tibetan MP and Advisor of ITFA Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok elaborated that the responsibilities to maintain a favorable relationship rests on both sides and on each individual on the either sides. He said, “When we talk about friendship and peaceful co-existence, it is not something that can be managed by people on the chair alone. It is something that each individual must work towards and imbibe in their day to day lives.”
The International Himalayan Festival is the most visible date on the Indo Tibetan Friendship Association calendar. This year’s edition which is slated for this Thursday will have HP state’s Housing, Urban Development and Town & Country Planning Minister Sudhir Sharma as the Chief Guest and Central Tibetan Administration’s Prime Minister Dr. Lobsang Sabgay as the Guest of Honor for the proceedings.
