Tibetans protests at the 41st session of Human Rights Council in Geneva/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, June 29: Tibetans in Liechtenstein and Switzerland carried out a peaceful protest at the ongoing 41st Session of Human Rights Council taking place in Geneva yesterday.

Tibetans urged the member countries to assert pressure on China to adhere to the International Human Rights norms.

About 50 members of Tibetan community braced the heat to protest from 11:00 am to 04:30 pm. It was attended by the Representative of the Tibet Bureau Mr. Chemey Rigzin, members of Tibetan NGOs, public and Tibet supporters.

Rigzin spoke at length about the dire situation prevailing in Tibet right now.

Norbu, the president of the community asserted that the member states present at the council should try to alleviate the suffering of Tibetans inside Tibet through the human rights council.

The protestors also submitted an appeal to the United Nations High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet in which it stated that since it has been 30 years since the formulation of Convention on the Rights of the Child, the council should inquire China about the 11th Panchen Lama, abducted at the age of six in 1995.

The appeal also called for the protection of education and language rights of children in Tibet and for an independent fact-finding committee to Tibet to ascertain the case of language right activist Tashi Wangchuk and the case of numerous self-immolations in Tibet so far.

The appeal letter further said that if the member states remain silent and fail to bring up human rights issues with China, it breaches the fundamental principle of the human rights council, adding that peaceful dialogue between China and representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama remains the only viable solution to resolve the Tibet issue.

Tenzin Wangmo, representative of the Swiss Tibetan Friendship Association, President of Regional Tibetan Women Association Dekyi Santamaria, and Regional Tibetan Youth Congress Representative Tenzin Dechen also spoke at the demonstration.
