Miss Tenzin Paldon, 21, from Kollegal Tibetan settlement in South India, was crowned Miss Tibet 2017 at a packed TIPA Grounds in McLeod Ganj on Sunday evening, to the cheers of several thousand young Tibetans.

Paldon has a degree in aviation management, and is currently working as a cabin crew at Spice Jet Airlines.

Upon receiving the crown, Paldon said “I’m blessed and happy that I won the contest. I truly believe destiny has something planned for everyone.”

After seven rounds over three days, the three judges decided Tenzin Khechoe as the First Runner-up, while Tenzin Nordron, a second-year history student, was judged the Second Runner-up.

Paldon won one lakh rupees (Rs 100,000), which was sponsored by Tibetan businessman in Taiwan Tenzin Charlie, while the First Runner-up Tenzin Khechoe’s Rs 50,000 prize money was sponsored by a businessman in California, US, Tenpa Dorjee. The Second Runner-up Tenzin Nordon received rupees 25,000, which came from the Director’s pocket.

Netizens also favoured Tenzin Paldon for the Miss Photogenic title, with 5,161 (36%) out of a total 14,285 votes.

The winner and the First Runner-up also won a two-week trip to Vietnam, sponsored by Claire Huynh Hong Hai.

Paldon said that a Pageant like Miss Tibet gives young women a platform to help them become independent and strong.

She hopes to inspire and influence the younger Tibetan generation to be determined, honest, and dedicated. She said, “I will support my people living inside Tibet where there are no human rights. We all Tibetans here in India are very lucky and grateful to His Holiness for his tireless contributions and I always pray for his health and long life.”

In a surprise move, Director Lobsang Wangyal announced that this year’s Pageant was his last, saying he has organised it for 15 years.

“The Pageant will continue but under a different production house. I have been doing this for 15 years, and it would be good idea to leave on the high note of this successful pageant, with nine contestants and such a huge gathering,” Wangyal said before before announcing the winner.

“It is time for change. Someone else should carry forward the legacy. Interested parties should come forward to take over. The buyers must manage upholding the original aims and objectives of the Pageant.”
