DHARAMSHALA: Tibetans and supporters held solidarity vigils in different parts of Australia and New Zealand to highlight the grim situation in Tibet and express solidarity with Tibetans who have sacrificed their precious lives through self-immolation on 8 August. The day was also observed as the first anniversary of Kalon Tripa in office.

Tibetans in their traditional dresses and supporters organised a prayer service in front of the Chinese embassy in Melbourne. They urged foreign minister Bob Carr to follow up his earlier appeal to the Chinese government to allow ambassador Frances Adamson and an Australian parliamentary delegation to visit Tibet to examine the reasons for the self-immolations.

Prayer services, candle vigils and peace rallies were organised in Whangarei, Oakland and Christchurch in New Zealand.
