Dalai Lama arrives in Bodh Gaya for 32nd Kalachakra/ENG

2011. december 31./Tibet Sun/TibetPress

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama arrived in Bodh Gaya to confer the 32nd Kalachakra initiation for ten days starting from the new year. He visited the Mahabodhi Temple upon his arrival and offered prayers.

Kalachakra initiation represents one of the most extensive of the highest yoga tantras in Tibetan Buddhism for removing obstacles to Buddhahood.

An estimated 200,000 people are expected to gather for the initiation in the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have gained enlightenment.

The Dalai Lama will depart for the teaching hall at 6.30 am on 1 January for the consecration of the venue. In the afternoon, he will perform the first part of the initiation ceremony by accepting the students and then giving a brief teaching from 1 to 3 pm.

The devotees are required to register to enter the venue. Registration is free, but attendees must have two passport-size photos.

The Tibetan Youth Congress has been providing announcement assistance. An emergency medical unit has also been installed. Their members have been actively assisting the devotees upon arrival at the Gaya railway station.

A host of other activities have been arranged by the exile Tibetan administration, non-governmental organisations, and other groups.

The Central Tibetan Administration has installed a make-shift Tibet Museum. It was inaugurated by Pema Khandu, minister of tourism of Arunachal Pradesh state and son of late chief minister Dorjee Khandu.

The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts presented a Lhamo (Tibetan opera) presentation on Friday and cultural performances on Saturday evening.

The Alliance of Tibetan Musicians, comprising artistes such as Jhola Techung, Tsering Gyurmey, Chodak, Tenzin Gyalpo (Michael), and others, performed in a concert dedicated to the martyrs of Tibet. About a dozen new music albums by Tibetan singers have been released during the Kalachakra.

Many other Tibetan NGOs such as the Tibetan Women’s Association, Gu Chu Sum Movement, Students for a Free Tibet, and others have installed information booths.

The general arrangements provided by the local administration are seen to be inadequate. The local police chief SS Chauhan said one hundred police personnel have been deployed to provide security, and there is only one ambulance in place in case of emergencies. The price rise is rampant. The entire area is dusty and noisy, causing respiratory problems, headache, and fever for many people.

The 14th Dalai Lama conferred his first Kalachakra initiation in Lhasa, Tibet, in 1954. The first one held in exile was in McLeod Ganj, India, in 1970. the Dalai Lama has since conferred this initiation in countries such as the US, Switzerland, Spain, Mongolia, Australia, Austria, and Canada.

The 32nd Kalachakra was given at the request of late Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. His family has taken charge as chief patron after the late chief minister passed away in a helicopter accident in April.

The Kalachakra will conclude on 10 January with a long-life empowerment for the public and a long-life ceremony for the Dalai Lama.

The teachings will be streamed live online at DalaiLama.com/liveweb.
