China helps Pakistani terror chief escape UN sanction list for third time/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, FEB. 8: India’s bid to register Pakistani terror outfit chief will most likely be undone after China objected to the move, putting the proposal on hold for the third time.

Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) Chief Masood Azhar is accused of masterminding last year’s Pathankot IAF base attack as well as the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The proposal by India to put him on the global terror list of the Sanctions Committee has been going on for almost a decade now.

On Tuesday (Jan. 7), India’s third attempt was bolstered by US’s support who approached the UN for enactment of the proposal. Likewise, France and United Nations which have been strong allies of the US also supported the move. However China moved to block the proposal as it did twice before thereby impeding the move.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs in response said, "We've been informed of this development and the matter has been taken up with the Chinese government."

India’s push to list Azhar earlier in 2008 and in April 2016 was also vetoed out by China. The moves by China, many say, came after consulting Pakistan which on many occasions has been accused by India of harboring and even sanctioning state sponsored militants across Indian border.

Maulana Masood Azhar was one of the three terrorists released in exchange for passengers on the hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 814 (IC814) that had taken off from Kathmandu and landed in Taliban controlled Kandahar, Afghanistan, in December 1999.
