DHARAMSHALA, April 26: China has maintained its poor record when it comes to the freedom of press in the country, according to the annual ‘World Press Freedom Index’ by the international press freedom watchdog Reporters sans frontières (Reporters Without Border).

The Communist nation has been ranked 176th amongst 180 countries and territories, just four places above the last country. Only Syria, Turkmenistan, Eretria and North Korea were ranked below the world’s largest populated nation. This is the second consecutive year that China has been placed 176th in the index.

In a unique annotation, the index publishers regarded China as "the world's leading prison for citizen journalists". The report further stated, “The planet’s leading censor and press freedom predator, Chinese President Xi Jinping, is the instigator of policies aimed at complete hegemony over news coverage and the creation of an international media order heavily influenced by China. In 2015 and 2016, many citizen journalists, bloggers, and human rights activists, including foreign ones, were arrested and forced into confession.”

Raising alarm at the number of journalists and bloggers still in detention, Reporters sans frontières highlighted the plight of those detained by Chinese authorities. “More that 100 journalists and bloggers are currently detained. They include the well-known journalist Gao Yu and three RSF Press Freedom laureates: Lu Yuyu, Li Tingyu and Huang Qi, the founder of the independent news website 64Tianwang,” it further stated.

China has also managed to extend its poor record of press freedom in Hong Kong as well which in the recent times have been coaxed by Beijing; falling to 73rd from 34th in the ranking, thereby relinquishing its crown of the most free press in Asia over to Taiwan which has been ranked 45 in the RSF index.

Tibet under China’s colonial occupation has steadily been regarded as a region with one of the poorest human rights record for the last few decades since its invasion by China in the 1950’s. However, access to the place has eluded members of the international diplomacy and especially the world press. Tibet falls below North Korea when it comes to difficulty of access for media.

Carole McGranahan, a University of Colorado professor and Tibet scholar earlier told International Business Times that, “There have been a handful, a very small handful, of journalists who’ve managed to get in (Tibet) and do some reporting. But in general, the line I like to use is that there are more foreign journalists right now in North Korea than there are in Tibet.”
