Free Tibet statement on Xi Jinping’s assumption of the Presidency of the People’s Republic of China/ENG

“An intense and shocking wave of protests within Tibet accompanied the appointment of Xi Jinping to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party in November. The period since has seen an increase in repression, with arbitrary detention, show trials, punitive sentences, communications clampdowns and acidic propaganda. But repression is not a sustainable policy – it has not only failed to contain Tibetans’ aspirations for more than fifty years but has fuelled their desire for freedom.  In assuming his full responsibilities, Xi Jinping has an opportunity to write a new script for Tibet: to bring human rights and rule of law to Tibet now, to recognise the grievances and aspirations underlying the protests and to engage in meaningful dialogue with the representatives of the Tibetan people. Mao said ‘where there is oppression there is resistance’: Xi Jinping must recognise that and show leadership and vision over Tibet where his predecessors failed.”
