DHARAMSHALA, May 7: A middle aged Tibetan man who survived physical and mental torture in Chinese detention has reportedly passed away in Rebkong, Amdo in eastern Tibet.

Yeshi Gyatso, 50, died last week on May 1, the human rights desk of the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration said Monday.

Gyatso was arrested on March 2008 for taking part in the 2008 Pan-Tibet peaceful protests. During his detention that lasted several months, he was tortured and beaten severely. The inhuman treatment suffered by Yeshi Gyatso while in police custody left him with deep mental scars with severe psychological impact, CTA run Tibet.net said.

“Yeshi Gyatso’s passing away is the third death of a former political prisoner dying due to health conditions sustained in the Chinese prisons and detention centers in the recent times. Recently former political prisoners Pema Wangchen and Lekshey Thupten passed away due to health complications sustained during the torture inflicted upon them in Chinese prisons,” tibet.net said.

A fellow native of Rebkong told Voice of Tibet that Yeshi’s severe torture both on physical and mental level caused him to be mentally unstable in the aftermaths of his detention.

Injuries and life long health complications due to torture and beatings in Chinese jails are a common occurrence in Tibet. Apart from death in detention, former Tibetan political prisoners are victims of health complications that cause hardship to their family after their release.
