DHARAMSHALA, May 2: His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the President of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Dr. Lobsang Sangay congratulated the new emperor of Japan, 59-year-old Naruhito yesterday, who received the sacred imperial regalia that represents his rightful succession to the world’s oldest monarchy.

His father, Emperor Akihito, 85, abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne on April 1, becoming the first monarch to abdicate the imperial throne of Japan in more than two centuries.

“I warmly admire Your Majesty’s determination,” His Holiness wrote, “to continue your respected father, the Emperor Emeritus’s, compassionate approach of interacting closely with the public while fulfilling the responsibility of Symbol of the State.”

His Holiness expressed profound respect for the resilience of the people of Japan and for the way the nation rose up again from the ashes of World War II.

He wrote that Japan had faced unprecedented natural disasters in subsequent years but has recovered thanks to a combination of hard work and strength of spirit.
“I have seen this with my own eyes when I had the opportunity to visit areas struck by the devastating earthquake and the tsunami of 2011. I met there with people affected by these calamities, and we prayed together for those members of the community who had lost their lives.”

Remarking on his regular visits to Japan in the last 50 years, His Holiness said, “I have deeply appreciated the interest and enthusiasm that people from all walks of life have shown in my efforts to encourage the cultivation of such fundamental human values like compassion and religious harmony.”

His Holiness sent prayers that His Majesty’s reign will be successful, that the people will be happy, and that the new era will contribute to a more peaceful, compassionate world.

The political head of Tibetan government in exile, Sangay sent greetings to His Excellency Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the people of Japan on the historic occasion.
He wrote, “The reign of the next Japanese emperor which will be known as the ‘Reiwa’ era translates as ‘Hope’ in the Tibetan language.”
Sangay thanked the people and government of Japan for the firmly supporting the resolution of the issue of Tibet through dialogue.
