DoE brings comic figure ‘forgetful uncle pig’ to life for children/ENG

DHARAMSHALA, June 21: The Department of Education (DoE) today launched an animation series of the well-known comic character ‘the forgetful uncle pig’ from the Tibetan children’s literature with a goal to improve the Tibetan language and to create more interest in the language amongst children.

Brought to life by Jamphel Animation, the animation series of the forgetful uncle pig consists of ten episodes out of which the Education Minister, Ngodup Tsering, launched the first two episodes today with the third standard students of Petoen Model School in audience.

Speaking to Phayul, Jamphel Dorjee of Jamphel Animation said, “It is hard to say when the rest of the episodes may be ready since it is time consuming. Moreover, the funding is also an issue and the script writing also takes time.”

The animator said that the two episodes (6-minute each) have taken duration of one and a half year to make. The series is available in both 2D and 3D.

“Through such program, we aim at providing opportunities and platforms to the Tibetans specializing in different field such as animation and dubbing,” said Tsering Samdup, Additional Secretary of DoE.

Along with the animation series, two dubbed episodes from Epic Channel’s animated series of Buddha-Sutra in Tibetan language, were also launched. The Tibetan Dubbing Society will be dubbing the entire 13 episodes of the series.

Education minister Ngodup Tsering at the launch said that for children animation is very effective means of telling a story. “Since it is a first of its kind with very limited resources, it would be unfair to compare them with other advanced productions. It is however, a proud first step since the initiative is carried out by an all-Tibetan team.”

He also added that it would be easier for the Children to learn the language if “we manage to introduce Tibetan from an early age through animations.”

“I really like the forgetful uncle pig but I did not like the dubbed Buddha-Sutra much because there were many words, which were hard to understand. I would have understood if the words were easier,” said 8-year-old Kunga Choekyap.
