DHARAMSHALA, June 17: Sense of oneness of humanity is the solution to man-made problems in today’s world, said the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama, suggesting that the sense of oneness of the humanity should be introduced through education and awareness.

In his address to the 25,000 strong audience at the RIMAC Field at UC San Diego Friday, the Dalai Lama said, “It is sad to see human created problems since we all do not want sufferings. I feel it is mainly due to lack of oneness of humanity. Therefore, we must all consider ourselves as same with no barriers.”

Speaking on ‘Embracing the Beauty of Diversity in Our World’, the Nobel Peace Laureate said that diversity in language, culture and race of this world are like different varieties of flowers in a big garden, which bring more attractiveness in the world.

“In this planet of human beings there are different cultures, different languages and different ways of life, which are not imposed but is a result of evolution. Such differences are practical and useful. However, we must not give too much emphasis on secondary level of difference of race, religion, culture, rich and poor, and educated and uneducated,” said the Dalai Lama, who feels too much emphasis of such differences is one of the sources of man-made problems.

The 81-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader advised the audience of various nationalities to have a balanced approach by preserving one’s own cultural heritage and identity alive without losing the sense of oneness of humanity.

“The emphasis of ‘we’ and ‘they’ are the basis of bully, exploitation and violence. We must all consider as part of ‘we’ including the troublemakers and enemies, who are also human beings and deserving of our love and kindness in spite of their negative outlook,” he said, asking everyone to act as a one human family.

Advising the audience to smile more, the Dalai Lama said, “Smile is a unique thing about human being. It brings sense of closeness even when we have difficulty in communicating in different languages. However, diplomatic and sarcastic smiles bring more suspicion. So genuine smile is the sign of love and kindness.”

An advocate of inclusion of secular ethics in school curriculum in educational institutions without emphasis on any religious faith, the Tibetan leader said the modern education focuses on materialist values more and lacks scope for development of inner values.

“I appeal to all institutions to pay more attention about education of moral ethics. Just like physical hygiene we must include education about hygiene of emotion. Education about material values provide us physical comfort and education on moral gives us mental peace,” he said adding that a curriculum is being drafted on secular ethics with Emory University,.

Before the start of the public talk, the Mayor of San Diego Kevin Faulconer presented His Holiness the Dalai Lama the key to the city while thanking him for making the world a more peaceful place.

The Dalai Lama will be the keynote speaker on Saturday at the UCSD’s commencement, where he will speak on ‘The Value of Education, Ethics and Compassion for the Well-Being of Self and Others’.
