DHARAMSHALA, October 14: The Tibetan Spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Thursday expressed his condolence over the passing away of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.

In a letter to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Tibetan spiritual leader expressed wrote, “The Thai people have looked to him as a source of hope and inspiration for more than 70 years. I offer my condolences to Her Majesty, the members of the family and the people of Thailand.”

The Tibetan leader recalled the ‘honor of meeting the late King’ during his first visit to Thailand in 1967.

According to the statement of the Royal family, “Bhumibol passed away peacefully at 3.52 p.m. (local time) on Thursday at Siriraj hospital in Bangkok.”

Marking the end of the world’s longest-reigning monarch of 70 years, the late king was enthroned at the age of 18 in 1946.

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha announced a year long national mourning for the king who was seen as a father figure and source of stability of the country.

"His Majesty the King brought people from their hopelessness to their determination, security and courage to cope with obstacles," the prime minister said.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn was appointed as his successor in 1972. However, his enthronement as the next king is yet to be announced.
