Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said that the Tibetan situation will see the light of day, as truth is on their side.

“China may have the power of the gun, but the power of truth cannot be defeated by the power of the gun. Ultimately truth will prevail,” he said.

Speaking from his throne to the packed hall and courtyard of the Tsuglakhang Temple in McLeod Ganj during a long-life prayer offering for him, the Dalai Lama said that Tibet is passing through a dark period.

“The indomitable spirit of the Tibetans, particularly those who are inside Tibet, despite the hardships under the Chinese occupation is giving me the strength to live longer.”

The long-life offering (Tenshug in Tibetan) was jointly organised by Shang Gaden Choekhorling Monastery, Federation of Tibetan Cooperatives, Chushi Gangdrug (based in Delhi), Tibetans from Bhutan, and people of Kham Gonjo.

A chest infection in April led to urgent hospitalisation of the Dalai Lama in Delhi, scaring the Tibetan community and his followers around the world. However he was discharged with full recovery in a few days.

Appearing in his usual energetic form, he said that his doctors have found him to be in excellent health. “There is nothing to worry about my health, I may live more than 100 years.”

The Dalai Lama further said that despite the hardships, Tibetans both inside Tibet and in exile have managed to preserve the Tibetan culture and identity.

“For anyone wishing to practice the Buddhism that was prevalent in Nalanda, it is the Tibetan language alone that is able to explain the ancient philosophy, as it has kept the old tradition intact.”

The Dalai Lama, who turned 84 in July, abdicated his political powers in 2011 to an elected Tibetan leader. Since then he has been engaged in promotion of human values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, and self-discipline, and inter-religious harmony.

He has been vocal about global warming and environmental issues, and has been an influential spokesman for the Free Tibet movement. Lately, he has been engaged in the revival of ancient Indian thought.
