DHARAMSHALA, June 20: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived at Newport Beach in Orange County, California yesterday. Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and a group of Tibetans with a traditional welcome received the spiritual leader.

The Dalai Lama met with the local chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), a global network of young chief executives, with whom he shared his message of love and compassion, oneness of humanity and his concern for environmental issues.

“When I was at the Mayo Clinic the other day, I noticed that patients are received just as people in need of treatment, with no questions about their background, nationality, race or faith,” the Dalai Lama said, “Most of our problems start from an over-emphasis on such secondary differences between us. The only remedy is to recall that fundamentally we are the same. We need to stress the oneness of humanity.”

The Nobel Peace Laureate stressed that all major religious traditions of the world convey the same message of love, compassion and tolerance despite having different philosophical points of view.

Sharing his view on terrorism, the 81-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader said, “A terrorist is a terrorist and as soon as people engage in such actions, they cease to be sincere Muslims or Buddhists.”

Expressing his concerns over the environmental issues including the need to protect the ecology of the Tibetan plateau, the Dalai Lama said that since human beings are social animal, who are interdependent on one another, global problems like climate change become collective responsibility of all.

The Dalai Lama is scheduled to stay in the US for another week and thereafter return to India on June 26. Upon his arrival in India, he will leave for Ladakh for a six-weeks’ sojourn.
