Forty Tibetan monks from Bora Monastery were arrested in the wee hours today by Chinese security officers after about 112 monks took out a protest march against the Chinese government on 19 March 2012, according to information received by TCHRD.
The arrests occurred at around 2 am (Tibet Time) on 21 March 2012 when security officers from the local township office entered the monastery and arrested 40 monks.
Hours later, news spread among other monks at the monastery about the night time arrests provoking a large gathering of monks who called for the immediate release of fellow monks. Sources said the monks told security officials that holding fellow monks in detention would make matters worse and urged for their immediate release. But Bora Monastery monks were unable to exit the monastery compounds due to ongoing siege.
The local security officials finally released all 40 monks today at around 11 am (Tibet Time). The released monks and others who participated in the protest march are now required to make personal statements that they have made a 'mistake' which they will not repeat in future.
According to sources, all monks at Bora Monastery had been warned that the protests they staged on 19 March was 'illegal' and strict measures would be followed in future.
The local officials have demanded that the monks turn in the portraits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetans flags which were prominently featured during the protest march.
On 19 March 2012, about 112 monks from Bora Monastery staged a protest march from the monastery to the local township office carrying portraits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan flags and calling for human rights, religious freedom, and language rights in Tibet.
Bora Monastery is located in Sangchu (Chinese: Xiahe Xian) County in Kanlho (Chinese: Gannan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province.
The monastery is now under siege with security officers keeping a strict watch over movements in and out the monastery.
The identities of those arrested are not immediately known.
