DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 15: China is seeking to expand its digital autocracy beyond its border and into the international arena through the Chinese telecommunications and tech giant Huawei said Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi at a Security Conference in Munich on Friday.

The veteran US politician urged nations to not engage in business with the Chinese company, which is the largest global network equipment supplier and leader in the 5G technology. Pelosi said that choosing the company accused of intellectual theft and espionage would be liking choosing “autocracy over democracy”.

“China is seeking to export its digital autocracy through its telecommunication giant Huawei. Nations cannot cede our telecommunication infrastructure to China for financial expediency. Such an ill-conceived concession would only embolden (President) Xi (Jinping) as he undermines democratic values, human rights, economic independence and national security,” She said.

Pelosi’s remarks are in line with the US leadership’s outright rejection of the Chinese company that is said to have close ties with the ruling Communist party of Beijing. The Chinese company has rejected the accusations.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier said, “We view the intrusion of the Chinese Communist party into information technology systems as a very great risk, a national security risk as well as a core privacy risk. If your health records are on a system that belongs and is controlled by the Chinese Communist party that is probably not something you would probably choose in the first instance.”

The US has consistently called for nations to not allow Huawei into their countries. Nations such as Japan, Australia and New Zealand have banned the company while many others like India are undecided. Huawei currently has a broad market that span over 50 nations, mainly in Asia and South America where its technology are being used on a day to day basis.
