DHARAMSHALA, MARCH 30: The new Canadian Ambassador to China, John McCallum, has said that business with China would not be at the cost of human rights and labor standard, adding that if the nations enter into talks, both the issues would be on the table.

“I have seen lots of enthusiasm in Canada for a deal with China and I am also keen to pursue deeper economic ties but not at the expense of human rights,” McCallum said adding that they have do this with their eyes open.

Ambassador McCallum told the Canadian Press on Wednesday that Ottawa would include both the issues in its free trade deal though trade negotiations are yet to begin.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has often spoken for human rights during his one-week state visit to China in September last year. “I remind everyone that as a country that has seen first hand the benefits of free expression and good governance, Canada encourages China to do more to promote and protect human rights,” Trudeau said in Beijing.

Echoing what the Canadian Prime Minister said on China’s human rights records, the new Ambassador said that Canada doesn’t agree on everything with Beijing and that its strong ties with China help them in being more frank in the areas of disagreement. “We know that in many areas, China and Canada have different views of the world, different priorities, different laws,” he said, “There are huge gains for Canadians if we're successful. We also have responsibility on the human rights side. We do both.”
