DHARAMSHALA, September 8: India has proposed an ambitious rail network to strengthen its rail network along the border with Tibet in order to match China’s railroad built across Tibet and planned railroad near the Indo-Tibetan border in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Indian Railways estimated that the 498 km long Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line project would cost an estimated 22,831 Crore (2283100,00,000) Rupees. The project not only serves as an important means for military purpose. It is also expected to increase the tourism of the region.

The new rail line would pass through Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti of Himachal Pradesh to reach Leh, Ladakh, thus adding another means of travel to the hot tourist destination.

The Defense Ministry has also advised the authorities to further strengthen the rail network near Nepal against China’s plan to built railway line till Kathmandu and another parallel to Arunachal.

To speed up the survey work of the project, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) has allotted land to set up a camp office. The responsibility of final location survey work has been given to Rail India Technical and Economic Service.

Northern Railway General Manager AK Puthia along with team of senior officers visited Leh to discuss the issue of railway connectivity to the region with the local authorities, during which they assured land allotment would be a top priority.

China has already built a 1,629km Tibet Lhasa-Chengdu railway at an altitude of over 3600 meters above sea level.
