DHARAMSHALA, May 10: The foremost Tibetan Buddhist leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, has resumed his regular schedule after recovering from a chest infection that saw him hospitalized last month. He began a teaching primarily for for his devotees from Russia this morning here at the Thekchen Choling Tsuklakhang temple.

Close to 9000 people including around 1100 people from Russia, 5195 people from 70 different countries and more than 2000 Tibetans attended the day one of the teaching which is being translated into 12 different languages.

The 83-year-old this morning began his discourse on ‘Tsongkhapa’s The Three Principal Paths (lamtso namsum) & The Furthest Everlasting Continuum’. Russians from the Buryat, Kalmykia, and Tuva region as well as devotees from traditionally Buddhist nations such as Korea, Vietnam and China were welcomed and greeted by the Dalai Lama.

The Tibetan leader who is the most vocal advocate of the Nalanda tradition encouraged the congregation to employ reason, logic and questioning as a means to study the teachings which he said are not just religious texts but academic subjects. He also recounted the fruitful historical ties between Tibet and the Buddhist areas of Buryat, Kalmykia, and Tuva region which were bridged by many scholars who came to study Buddhism in Tibet.

The Dalai Lama also urged his followers to grasp at the evolving ties between Science and Buddhism which have shared scholarly as well as academic spaces in the last few decades, the collaborative initiatives of which were pioneered by the Tibetan leader himself and leading western scientists.

The octogenarian Tibetan leader’s association with the devotees from Russia goes back to over a decade with teachings for them held once a year. In the past years, teachings for Russian followers have been held in Dharamshala, New Delhi and Riga, Latvia. The ongoing teachings will conclude on Sunday.
